In July, 2011, Pat and I flew to Kiev, Ukraine, and boarded the Viking Lomonosov for a 12-day cruise on the Dnieper River to the Black Sea; then we flew to Istanbul, Turkey, for four days. In this part we travel along Lenin Embankment to Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and Livadia. We visit the White Palace, site of the 1945 Yalta Conference between Roosevelt, Stalin and Churchill, and take a guided tour through official halls and private apartments of the czar's family. As I am visiting my friend in Kiev, Ukraine, I am staying with her in her grandparents' house in the country side of Kiev. They have few apartments. They have a garden where potatoes, flowers, grapes are grown. They have a dog, 3 geese, 5 cats, a dozen of chickens. They also grown some other agricultural products in another field. We go there to pick up the tomatoes, cucumbers, pumpkins while her grandpa is harvesting sunflower seeds, which can be made into eatable ones or to make oil out of it. Life is simple and self-sufficient. I absolutely love it.
